Mr Khanyile received National Excellence in Secondary School Teaching Award

The Geography teacher at Sibusisiwe Comp Tech High School received the Excellence in Secondary School Teaching award at the 23rd National Teaching Awards held in Pretoria on World Teachers' Day. Usiphatheleni Khanyile, aged 34, who instructs students in Grades 10 to 12, expressed his surprise at winning the national award, given the reputation of provinces like the Western Cape and Gauteng for producing outstanding educators.

Usiphatheleni Khanyile explained the steps he took to secure the award, starting by competing against other teachers in the uMlazi District and emerging as the winner. He then progressed to triumph in the group of coastal districts, subsequently winning the KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) title, ultimately representing the province at the national awards ceremony.

In recognition of his achievement, Khanyile not only received a certificate and a trophy but also obtained various prizes, including R20,000 in cash from Via Africa, R10,000 in cash from USAid, as well as a laptop, cellphone, and R1,000 in one-time data from the Vodacom Foundation.

Celebreting Heritage Day

On the 27th of September 2023, Sibusisiwe High School came alive with a vibrant celebration of Heritage Day. The event showcased the rich diversity of the school, as both students and staff proudly donned their traditional attire, representing a kaleidoscope of cultures and traditions.

The atmosphere was one of unity and cultural appreciation, as the school community came together to honor the unique heritage of each individual. The day served as a wonderful reminder of the importance of preserving and celebrating our cultural roots, fostering understanding, and promoting harmony within the school and the wider community.

Sibusisiwe's Heritage Day celebration was a resounding success, fostering a sense of pride and belonging among all who participated, and serving as a beautiful testament to the richness of South Africa's cultural tapestry.

A prestigious award has been claimed by three students from Sibusisiwe Comp Tech High School.

Three students hailing from Sibusisiwe Comp Tech-High School in Umbumbulu, located just outside of Pietermaritzburg, have secured the prestigious Step Up 2 A Green Start Up National Youth Entrepreneurship award.

Their victorious business proposal centered around the production of environmentally-friendly coal derived from Marula nuts. Recognizing the environmental concerns associated with conventional coal as an energy source, they decided to create a more eco-conscious alternative.

Zanele Khwela, a member of the award-winning team, expressed her belief that the judges were impressed by their idea due to its potential to supplant the conventional coal industry and its positive impact on the community in various ways.

The trio of Grade 11 students claimed the top position, earning a range of rewards, including scholarships, tablets, a seed funding of R20,000, and an exciting journey to Silicon Valley.

The Step Up 2 A Green Start Up National Youth Green Entrepreneurship Programme is administered by the youth development organization Primestars. Over the course of the last eight years, it has empowered nearly 100,000 young individuals, demonstrating to them that they possess the ability to make a positive impact on both the environment and the job market in South Africa. This is achieved by turning environmental challenges into new business prospects.

Martin Sweet, the Managing Director of Primestars, emphasized the importance of equipping the youth with skills and competencies essential for creating their own businesses and becoming valuable employers in a circular, restorative, inclusive, and eco-friendly economy as a means to combat the high unemployment rate.

Mr. Phini is only retiring from the position of the Acting Principal and not from the joys & prosperity of life that is more to be bestowed upon by the Devine. His contributions to the school have been immeasurable. He is one of the pillars of the school's success. May his new journey refresh & strengthen him. Lots of love.

Mrs. Gcabashe G.P We are so excited for her next big life adventure, though it is hard to see her leaving the school. Knowing that better things lie ahead for her is consolation enough. Goodluck and tons of the best wishes to her.
